I detailed my setup for FPV (First Person View) RC flying in a recent entry. I also posted a video of some pretty good flying.
But just in case that makes it look like I actually know what I'm doing, here's evidence that I've never really done this before. Not all FPV flights go well. Not all bad flights are disasters, either. This flight was one that was almost a disaster.
Here's an animated gif-illustrated story of my latest flight. It was a very cold morning but it appeared to be calm and I was all packed up, so I headed out.
Once I was at the field it was a lot windier than I thought. I flew anyway. I barely know what I'm doing.
It's much windier than I expected. But I'm going to fly anyway, I came all the way out here after all.
So far so good. Smooth takeoff despite the wind.
It really is windy though. Oh crap I'm unintentionally flying sideways
Now the video's glitching, I seem to get way more interference than usual this morning.
I have to admit I feel somewhat in over my head.
I go into a stall OH SHI
But by some miracle I pull out of it! *hyperventilating* Note: that brief segment of a horizon after the static isn't the gif looping. I actually pulled out and that's all the recorder managed to get what with all the interference.
That's enough for now, let's bring it in for a nice landing. I make several passes in the high wind before I line up well enough. I finally feel stable and confident enough to come in on the third pass, which is three more than it takes for me to stop feeling my fingers.
I guess it could have been worse. Like the crash that came after it which busted up the camera mount:
